Future Professors Workshops

Whether a graduate student’s teaching career begins this fall or after graduation, we can help prepare him/her to meet the demands of the profession. These interactive sessions will introduce relevant research, useful resources, and practical strategies for teaching at the college level. Our goal is to help graduate students enter the classroom and/or the job market feeling confident of their ability to design courses and teach them well. Because this workshop was so popular last year, we’re offering it three times this summer.

Registration Information

Registration is required for the Future Professors workshop, and participants will qualify for $100 stipends upon completion.

The Workshop is held in the ITDC Building (301 S. Main St.).

Workshop Descriptions

What the Best College Teachers Do
The characteristics that the best college teachers share are really habits of mind. In this session you'll get an overview of those habits of mind and receive a copy of the book What the Best College Teachers Do, by Dr. Ken Bain. Bain bases his conclusions on a 15-year study of some of the nation's best college teachers.
Designing Learning Outcomes
Well designed learning outcomes are the backbone of any successful course. In this session we'll explore the elements of successful learning outcomes and get some hands-on experience in writing them.
Principles of Effective Undergraduate Instruction
Becoming a successful college instructor takes more than a "bag of tricks"; it takes serious attention to some of the principles that underpin effective undergraduate instruction. In this session we'll review those principles and consider ways to implement them in your teaching.
Designing a “Promising Syllabus”
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and for many students your syllabus offers their first impression of your course. In this session we’ll explore Dr. Ken Bain’s notion of a “promising syllabus” and you’ll start creating a promising syllabus of our own.
Starting with Students: Who ARE these people?
The first disillusionment most new instructors face is the realization that most of their students aren't at all the kind of students THEY were in college. In this session we'll talk about who your students are and how you can best support their learning.
Designing Learning Activities
Well designed assignments can help students achieve the desired learning outcomes for the course. In today's session we'll consider what makes a well designed assignment and practice creating some for a course you plan or hope to teach someday.
The First Day of Class… and Beyond!
"Begin as you mean to continue" is an axiom new instructors need to keep in mind as they prepare for the all important "first day of class." In this session we will consider possible approaches to the first day of class and experiment with some strategies that make the first day a positive and productive experience for all.
Assessing Learning
Well considered assessment strategies can help instructors discover how well students are achieving the learning outcomes for the course. In this session we'll explore a variety of formative and summative assessment techniques and design an assessment plan for a course you plan or hope to teach someday.
