- 8:00-9:00 Check-in, Continental Breakfast, and Welcome Fair
- Pick up your name badge and New Faculty Information Packet outside the Brown Ballroom;
then enjoy a continental breakfast and stroll through our Welcome Fair for a chance to
visit with representatives from scores of campus units and other organizations. When
you’re ready, move in to the Old Main Room and watch a slide show introducing you
to your new academic home.
- 9:00- 9:20 Welcome and Introductions
- After brief welcoming remarks, you’ll participate in a “classroom clickers” demonstration
designed to help you learn something about your new campus and colleagues.
- 9:20-9:40 President and Provost Welcome
- President Al Bowman and Provost Sheri Everts will officially welcome you to our campus
and community.
- 9:40-10:05 Plenary Session: General Education: What's in it for You?
- Assistant Provost Mardell Wilson will discuss issues related to General Education, the
foundation upon which the rest of a student’s education at Illinois State University
is built.
- 10:05-10:30 Plenary Session: Campus-wide Initiatives You Need to Know About
- Learn more about the role(s) you can play in three campus-wide initiatives: the American
Democracy Project, the Political Engagement Project, and yearOne. (Speakers: Steve Hunt,
Danielle Lindsay)
- 10:30-10:40 Transition
- Take a break and move to a new space for the first of three breakout sessions.

- Choose among the following options:
- Difficult Classroom Situations
- ISU students are great, but they’re not always perfect! Difficult classroom
situations can—and will—arise. This session will provide tips for coping
as well as information about University policies, procedures, and resources that
can help.
- The Successful Researcher: Starting Out
- Come find out how award-winning researchers got their start and get answers to
questions about resources to support your research.
- The Successful First-Year Teacher
- What makes a successful first year of teaching and how do you achieve that? A
panel of second-year teachers (yes, they were at New Faculty Orientation
LAST year!) will answer your questions and share some insights into having a successful
first year of teaching.
- Library Orientation for Faculty
- Learn how to access Milner Library’s 1.5 million resources and put them
to work for you and your students. Wait ‘til you see what Milner Library
has to offer!
- 11:20-11:30 Transition
- Take a break and move back to the Old Main room.
- 11:30-Noon Plenary Session: These Are Our Students
- One of the keys to successful teaching is tailoring instruction to the students we have—not
the students we used to have, or the students we wish we had. ISU has great students.
Come learn more about them.

- Take a break and move in to the Brown Ballroom for lunch.

- You’ll be joined at your table by representative ISU students, administrators,
and members of the NFO Steering Committee. Here’s your chance to ask those burning
questions!
- 12:35-1:00 Speaker: ISU History
- History Professor Emeritus John Freed will share findings of his recent research into
Illinois State University’s first century-and-a-half.
- 1:00-1:10 Transition
- Take a break and move back to the Old Main Room.
- 1:10-1:35 Plenary Session: FERPA, the Helicopter Parent, and You
- Registrar Jess Ray will discuss some of the legal constraints you should keep in mind
as you negotiate the tension between helicopter parents and your students’ right
to privacy.

- NFO is just one component of ISU’s New(er) Faculty Initiative. Come learn about
other support options for new faculty. We’ll also have door prizes (must be present
to win) and hand out maps to the New Faculty Reception.
- 4:00-6:00 New Faculty Reception
- Relax with new friends and colleagues at this reception hosted by President Al Bowman
and Provost Sheri Everts at the University Residence, 1000 Gregory St., Normal, IL.
